Cartoons and Sketches

About three years ago, I formed the habit of drawing my two youngest brothers in cartoon form. The style was a bit more simplistic (like the drawings above) and I used the practice to loosen up. It would also keep the little ones more or less entertained. I would sketch them having crazy adventures... being kidnapped by aliens... joining the French Foreign Legion... all sorts of silly things. I also remember how they would slip out of the room to play with their toys or watch a movie, leaving me to sit and draw for hours. (Now I wonder who was baby-sitting who!)

I thought I would try it again this weekend and I put color to one. (by the way, this is unlike my youngest brother to throw a water balloon at an unsuspecting girl - he's not that bad!)

And here’s another pesky siblings idea sketch. Recently I’ve had the pleasure of sharing some of my personal space with a couple of “tadpolts,” so I found this drawing apropos.

Drawings and Ducks?

This is a sketch I did last night for practice. (I couldn't get loose to save my life!) And below are some images I didn't think I would be sharing with you today. This morning I spotted some baby ducks in the river. If their mother had not been with them, I would have thought that they were just leaves blowing around in the water. I quickly grabbed my camera and made a dash in my pajamas. Fortunately they came in close for a bite and I got these shots.

Hope you enjoy them!

Rainy Weekend

I finished this piece this weekend, and the weather really was perfect for it... intermittent thunder storms. The picture was inspired by my neighbor's granddaughter who has a sixty pound Blue Healer puppy. That's right, Puppy! He developed a bad habit of running up on the girl and either knocking her down or sending her flying. Usually because he was unable to stop. Of course his activities have since been checked, but when I think about it, I'm reminded of zany scenes from The Little Rascals.

This piece is for a contest so I have to get a hard copy in the mail quick. Have a great week!

Summer Constellations

I've been meaning to post more but can't seem to find the time. Here is a quick one I thought I would show. I took this photo of the constellation Scorpius the other night. So if the hot weather is not telling you that Summer is on it's way, the night sky will :)

I traced out what was visible of the constellation over the trees. Below is the picture without enhancement. Astronomy has always fascinated me!

Dancing Daschund!

There seems to be a lot of work right now, but only one project is illustration related. It's a small thing that I hope to share over the coming months.

The picture above is something I did about a year ago. It is a pencil drawing colored using Photoshop. At the time I was experimenting with this technique, but I was in love with my brushes and returned to them after a few months. I should be crowned as the "King of Indecisiveness" because this digital method is looking nicer to me.

Something I wish to study further is the use of color. I grasped the basic principles in college (I think) but some aspects got by me. (I must have been too busy looking through illustration source books.) Well I better go... I'm up to my eyeballs in plastisol and film positives. Have a great week!
